Trash Talk: ‘Smarketing’

Mortgage Monkey reveals the gibberish littering the industry’s press communications

BUSINESS SPEAK OF THE WEEK: ‘SMARKETING’

CULPRIT: UNNAMED

Normally Monkey writes about examples of business speak he has heard many times before, but sometimes he is surprised by a new one.

‘Smarketing’ is one such word. Monkey is reliably informed that the phrase is used by bright young things to mean ‘integrated sales and marketing’. The word was apparently coined by US marketing software firm HubSpot and is now making inroads this side of the pond.

But Monkey was sent the example by an employee of one of the UK’s big five lenders, so perhaps it will not take long for the fingernails-down-the-blackboard phrase to filter out into the market.

Monkey is all for new approaches to business but objects to the creation of horrendous portmanteau words in the process.

He calls for the total discontinuation of such verbiage.
