Mortgage Mole: Out to lunch?

Mortgage Mole-2017

Intrepid Mole,

Out to lunch?

Mole’s spies at Barclays tell him the firm had a recent mishap at its Canary Wharf offices in London, which led to an entire floor being evacuated and all staff being sent home.

The reason? Apparently, when trying to reheat their lunch in the staff kitchen, an unthinking employee put an aluminium carton into a microwave, resulting in “an explosion and a cloud of toxic smoke”.

Mole speculates that the red-faced employee responsible for the disturbance will be bringing only cold salads into work from now on.

What’s in a name?

As he was digging through some FCA board minutes recently, Mole spotted something that nearly made him spit out his Darjeeling: the regulator has appointed William Hague as its new director of human resources.

Upon closer inspection, it turned out that the new hire was not the famous former MP, ex-foreign secretary and one-time leader of the Conservative Party (left) but someone who was lucky enough — depending on one’s viewpoint — to share the former Cabinet minister’s name.

Mole did not want to hazard a guess at the size of the increase in firms’ regulatory bills had the FCA indeed appointed the well-known former politician to its ranks…

Wall Street mash-up

Mole also hears that Blane Perrotton, director of surveyors and consultants Naismiths, has an unusual nickname for some of his colleagues at the firm.

A Naismiths insider tells Mole that Blane, who jokingly refers to himself as the Wolf of Wall Street, routinely dubs a group of close colleagues “the wolfpack”.

Mole sincerely hopes any similarity to the blockbuster ends there…

Goodwill to all

With the season of goodwill upon us, Mole was heartened to hear about the recent deeds of two of the industry’s brokers.

In a very generous gesture, JLM Mortgage Brokers has clubbed together with estate agents Taylor Made to buy a minibus for a local school, Great Denham Primary.

Meanwhile, Rachel Lummis of Xpress Mortgages has just completed a year of volunteering at Surrey hospice Princess Alice, supporting cancer patients in their final days and helping to train new volunteers.

Yet again, Mole is proud to be part of such a selfless industry. Merry Christmas!
