Earl-y uptake


1857 has gone down in history for the Indian Rebellion, the birth of composer Edward Elgar and the founding of Sheffield FC.

But those in the know appreciate that the year also marks the founding of Earl Shilton Building Society, which celebrated its 160th birthday last week.

The lender still operates from Earl Shilton in Leicestershire, boasts 10,000 members and has close ties to the local area.
