One in three Britons say Canadian BoE governor is ‘unacceptable’

A new poll shows nearly one in three of Britons believe it is “unacceptable” for a Canadian citizen to be made governor of the Bank of England.

Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney is set to take over from Lord Mervyn King on Monday but a YouGov poll shows his nationality may be a factor in his approval ratings.

Chancellor George Osborne scoured the globe to find the best person for the job, turning down British candidates including ex-FSA chairman Lord Adair Turner and deputy governor Paul Tucker.

A total of 48 per cent of Britons support Carney’s appointment while 22 per cent are undecided.

Britons said the three best foreign nationalities for the Bank job are Canadian, Australian and American, while the three worst are Russian, Chinese and Iranian.

YouGov director of political and social research Joe Twyman says: “Mark Carney faces enormous challenges in his new role, and so the fact that a third of the British public do not think it is acceptable for a Canadian to be governor of the Bank of England probably is not at the top of his list of things to worry about.

“But in an increasingly globalised world it is perhaps no surprise that the Government has decided that considerations of national pride should take a backseat and instead they should get someone they regard as the best person for the job.”

Unaided I’d be amazed if one in ten Britons could tell you the Nationality of the BoE Govenor so I don’t see this being an issue!!

And we have a home grown cast list of discredited bankers and ex Government appointees – no surprise that George looked overseas

At least Mr Carney isn’t a member of any club to which any of the current UK Bank CEOs belong

    Good luck to him

Plenty of British governors in Canada historically though(!)

As a patriotic UK citizen I have no issue with a citizen of a firm ally and Commonwealth country being selected on merit. On that last point – only time will tell.
