Santander is to close its mortgage and lending operations in Wigan as it merges Alliance & Leicester’s activities into the group.
The group announced this morning that from October 15 all its intermediary mortgages will be branded Abbey.
The Wigan office employs 52 people. All staff will be offered redeployment to its Bootle site where vacancies exist within the bank’s fraud operations and multi-channel departments.
The lender says Bootle is a strategically important site for Santander in the UK and one that will be a continued focus for the consolidation of its operations.
A spokeswoman for Alliance & Leicester, says: “There is never a good time to announce changes such as this and we are acutely aware of the uncertainty staff are facing. We thank them for their continued professionalism and co-operation.”
