Nationwide could close up to four service centres

Nationwide has placed 145 staff in consultation as it considers closing four of its six mortgage service centres.

The lender says it is considering closing its centres in Birmingham, Chester, Doncaster and Newcastle and transferring these services to its two other centres in Glasgow and Northampton.

The proposals have resulted in all 145 staff from the centres being placed in consultation until the end of May.

A spokeswoman for Nationwide says: “It is too early to talk about redundancies. We are looking at proposals to close four of our centres. We believe that operating a smaller number of larger contact centres will allow us to become efficient.”

Ashley Cole: Cable compares the crestfallen striker with the PM begging for another chance

That Cable guy seems to know the score

Give rent-a-quote Liberal Democrat shadow chancellor Vince Cable his due, he and his party cohorts knew the economy would crash back in 2000. Addressing the faithful at his party’s last conference before the election Cable told his audience this prophetic moment occurred when 10 years ago “a group of us Lib Dem activists fought the […]

I have used the Nationwide Service centre in glasgow for a number of years and the service has always been excellent. The only drawback recently is when the calls have been diverted to Newcastle it can become frustrating when you cannot speak to the actual u/w. If they do merge I hope the service does not suffer.

I think that it is not Glasgow that is awful. As for the Halifax, they have relocated away from Glasgow to Livingstone. Tethering problems, but Abbey seem to have got a wee bit better

Agree with all other comments. Nationwide at Chester have been great. Don’t they realise that as business picks up more cases will follow. Have to agree with comment re Glasgow … Abbey prove it’s awful up there!

Tragic news! I use the Newcastle centre. The service is professional and very efficient. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Sad day if it closes.

the loss of the Newcastle service centre would be a big loss – the staff are very knowledgable and efficient and they are actually very enthusiastic – i have had experience of Northhampton and it was a complete nightmare -this would do a lot of damage to the Nationwide’s reputation

I’ve used Chester for several years and they’re brilliant.
    Nationwide – Don’t do it.

Glasgow again!!!! Doesn’t anyone learn from the Halifax and the fiasco known as Abbey!!!!!!!!

  • paul gallagher 7th April 2010 at 8:33 pm

The service from Chester has been excellent, with one telephone call which is directed to the appropriate person sorting everything out. In comparison, it can take an hour to speak to the wrong person at the Woolwich

Gutted! My favourite lender getting rid of a superb service centre in Newcastle! The staff are professional, knowledgeable and efficient- everything the other lenders don’t have to offer!!! REALLY disappointed with this news.

It is sad to hear this news but if the producers stop producing then administrators will be hit. I hope the FSA are reading this article with their large expenses, your day is coming.

What a pity, I’ve always had really fast and efficient service from their Birmingham Centre – just the complete opposite of the likes of Abbey.
