Not quite like a virgin… The long path to the dustbin of history has begun for the Northern Rock brand after its takeover by Virgin Money.

Sir Richard Branson’s firm took over the brand’s shirt sponsorship of Newcastle United with its debut outing against Manchester United last week.

Before the game the club offered the first 10,000 fans to the club shop the chance to get a Virgin patch for free to cover the old Northern Rock logo.

But the generous scheme has run into trouble already as some fans complain you can still see the Northern Rock logo through the Virgin patch. As ironic metaphors go it’s difficult to top this one, as is the news that Newcastle ran out of Virgin patches at the club shop.

“With a high demand already, to avoid queues, supporters are advised to wait until after the weekend to come to one of the club stores to get their free Virgin Money patch,” it advises.

…For the very first time On a happier note for Branson’s company, Newcastle got off to a flyer in their new kit, trouncing champions Manchester United 3-0 in emphatic fashion.

Mole thought the new Virgin branding was appropriate as it was probably the first time many of the team had beaten the legendary Mancunian giants.

As the booze began to flow in Soho, London, Dale bought a lighter to feed his nicotine habit.

He was amused to discover that he had unwittingly purchased the lighter in a well-known gay district and it contained a hologram feature that when projected against a wall showed a completely naked man.
