Over a third of consumers never heard of HIPs

Research carried out by OneSearch Direct shows over a third, 34% of consumers do not know what a Home Information Pack is, despite nearly nine out of ten, recognising the need for up front information before buying a property.

OneSearch Direct believes the research shows how necessary to the transaction process they are and highlights a worrying knowledge gap when it comes to consumer understanding of them.

While the research shows consumers are aware of the need to speed up the house-buying process, they may not be totally confident of what to do to ensure they tick all the boxes when selling their home.

Ronnie Park, managing director of OneSearch Direct, says; “What is really interesting about this research is not that there clearly exists a knowledge gap between what people believe is necessary to sell a house and what they consider a HIP to be.

“The varying opinions in the column inches covered by HIPs since their inception has clearly had an impact and could well have added to the confusion as to what the house seller’s responsibilities are.

“Clearly, the understanding of the general public when it comes to HIPs again needs to be addressed in order to make sure the housing market is bolstered, not damaged by public misunderstanding of the important and necessary role they play in the transaction process.”
