Housebuilding figures for September 2002

In September 2002, it is estimated that 16,900 dwellings were started in Great Britain compared with 15,400 in September 2001.

Completions of dwellings were estimated at 14,500 in September 2002 compared with 13,300 in September of the previous year.

In the latest three months 49,300 dwellings were started, up 5% on the same three months a year ago, while total completions at 40,900 were up 1% on the same three months a year ago.

Seasonally adjusted comparisons (see Notes to Editors) After allowing for seasonal variation, total starts were up 9% on the previous three months, and up 4% compared with the same period a year ago. On the same basis, private enterprise starts were also up 9% on the previous three months and up 1% compared with a year ago.

In the latest three months, completions were down 6% on the previous three months, but at the same level compared to the same period a year ago. Private sector completions were down 7% on the previous three months, but at the same level compared to the same period a year ago.

Seasonally adjusted figures for England show similar trends as those for Great Britain. Total starts were up 12% on the previous three months and up 6% on the same period a year ago. Total completions were down 8% on the previous three months and at the same level when compared to the same period a year ago.
