With the shutters now firmly down on most of Europe’s motorsport series there is only one to keep us entertained through the winter months – the new A1 Grand Prix series. This has been dubbed The World Cup of motorsport, incorporating the excitement of football’s World Cup. It has a different take on the way motor races are put on. It is different in as much as it is the country’s cars that score the points, rather than the drivers. So in theory you end up with one country becoming world champion at the end of the season. It’s a nice idea but I can see a few potential pitfalls. One of the problems I can imagine arising is that there is no official driver. It seems they have missed the point that people support and follow sports stars because they feel a connection with them or they like the way they go about their sport. David Beckham is a perfect example. He has a huge global following based on the way he looks and the way he plays. Let’s face it, the public wouldn’t support his shirt playing each week, with different players wearing it. I think it would be a better idea to designate a certain driver for the A1 Grand Prix series at the beginning of the season.
