Play time

The trials and tribulations of the sub-prime mortgage market have provided much fodder for the newspapers.

But last week the subject finally achieved the ultimate accolade, being made the subject of a BBC Radio 4 afternoon play.

Entitled When greed becomes fear, the play followed the complicated life of a female City executive called Jay during the liquidity crisis.

Jay relinquishes her bank job to collect her estranged daughter’s body from the US.

Her daughter was an academic who had been engaged in researching the sub-prime market.

Her findings led her to encourage poor borrowers cruelly taken advantage of by predatory lenders to take action against the guilty firms.

A story boiled in a potent pot of sex, money, betrayal, murder and family strife culminates in an FBI investigation into the international lending market. Hot stuff.
