“The attendant explained I looked too young and they thought I had stolen the car”

Name: Colin Blears
Age: 27
Company: Quest Associates
Job title: BDM and Home Information Pack specialist

Where do you live?
Arborfield, Berkshire

Describe your current job:
I’m responsible for the HIP side of the business and I work closely with clients on the deployment of Q-HIP technology.

What were your first and last jobs?
I worked for a specialist classic car restoration firm while doing an apprenticeship in vehicle mechanics. My last job was at BMW as a technician servicing and repairing vehicles. But this was uninspiring and I was keen to find fresh challenges.

What have you done in between?
Having worked at Quest for almost 10 years in a number of positions, there hasn’t been any time between the technician role at BMW and what I’m doing now.

How does your career to date compare with your
aspirations when you were younger?

I wanted to be an architect but while working on classic cars I realised what I enjoyed most was solving problems. Quest is faced with new challenges each day and this allows me to be creative.

What has been the defining point of your career and why?
Having the confidence to change career and not being afraid to try new things.

And the most embarrassing?
While restoring classic cars I took a customer’s Porsche to the petrol station and they stopped the pumps. The attendant explained that I looked too young and they thought I’d stolen the car.

What work ambition wouldyou like to achieve by retirement?
I would like to either be a director of a company or have established my own business.

How many mortgage payments do you have left?
None, my wife and I have paid it off.

What’s your Favourite holiday destination?
As a child my favourite destination was Disneyland. I enjoy the Middle East but since being held hostage at the age of 10 during the Gulf War and meeting Saddam Hussein it brings back mixed memories.

What would you take to a desert island and why?
A Swiss Army knife with a compass. This would be useful for building a boat to navigate my way home.

Who is your secret celebrity crush?
Katie Holmes.

What’s your mobile ringtone?
A Red Hot Chili Peppers tune.

What’s the most expensive gadget you’ve ever bought?
My snowboarding jacket. It has built-in Bluetooth headphones and speakers for my iPod.

What’s the craziest hobby you’ve ever attempted?
I enjoy surfing, snowboarding and mountain boarding while flying a 3.5m kite. I’m looking to have a go at skydiving next.
