Top Of The League
is an industry recognition scheme in association with Woolwich mortgages from Barclays. The aim is to recognise two outstanding individuals each month who will be named Player of the Month or Manager of the Month. Top of the League nominees have all delivered excellent service in their company or community, for colleagues or clients. Each month during the football season Woolwich talent scouts will be hunting out star players and managers in all major networks, clubs and brokerages. They will then be whittled down to a short list of five names, before the winners are chosen by our panel of judges. Winners will be presented with the same Barclays Premier League Player or Manager of the Month trophies that the football greats receive and other exclusive prizes.
Name: Dave Norfolk
Company: Alexander Hall
Job Title: Mortgage Adviser
What does being dubbed Top of the League mean to you?
It’s great. It’s a fantastic honour to even be nominated and great to win. It’s nice to have that sort of recognition.
In his nomination of you for TOTL Alexander Hall’s Andy Pratt says you have adapted to the new world of mortgage broking and increased your business levels by 40% during 2010, how did you do that?
I have just been very client focused. I have been here for eight years and I’ve been helping people to find the best deals. A lot of my business has been purchase business.
How has your firm adapted to the market downturn?
Everyone is working a lot harder. The company as a whole has done very well. We also get some fantastic leads from Foxtons.
You’re based in East London, how is the market in your local area at the moment?
We’ve seen more people looking to obtain mortgages this year than in 2008 and 2009. I think consumer confidence is returning.
What’s the best part about being a mortgage broker?
The best part of my job is helping clients. On the non-financial side, it is great when you get a phone call from someone who you have helped buy a property – someone who may not have been able to do so without your help. It’s the biggest transaction the client is likely to make so it’s nice to be able to help with that. I also enjoy talking to a diverse range of people, all with different needs, hopes and aspirations. It’s a varied job and no two days are ever the same.
If you could be the head of the FSA for a day, how would you improve the market?
That’s a tough one. I think a lot of the regulation that has come out recently is good and it should be encouraged. It just needs to make sure it does not push things too far.
Finally, if you could be any footballer for a day, who would you choose and why?
That would have to be Robert Pires. He was my all-time favourite Arsenal player and he has just returned to the premiership with Aston Villa.
Why judges picked…
