Remortgaging above average in December

Remortgaging remained above average in December 2006, says the Bank of England.

Statistics from the BoE show that although the purchasing of new homes dropped in December 2006, remortgaging figures remained above the six-month averages.

Remortgaging averages for the last six months of 2006 stood at 11.7bn, but December saw a slight rise of 0.1bn.

Total lending to individuals in December 2006 also saw a rise on previous months, reaching 11.6bn, a 0.4bn rise on November figures.

Overall, national debt in 2006 reached 1.29trillion, of which mortgage debt accounted for 1.077trillion.
