Top of the League – February

This month’s winner is Rachel Kirk, senior mortgage and protection adviser

Top of the League is the competition that seeks to reward the best talent in the broker market. Launched by Woolwich mortgages from Barclays in 2010, the aim is to offer intermediaries an opportunity to scoop fantastic prizes, such as the Barclays Premier League Player Of The Month trophy. But this season has an exciting twist. Working with Barclays, the TOTL team of judges and a representative from each network, the competition will concentrate on networks and clubs. Each month we will focus on a different network or club and look for a Player Of The Month exclusively from that company.

NAME: Rachel Kirk

COMPANY: Reeds Rains

JOB TITLE: Senior mortgage and protection adviser

WHY JUDGES PICKED KIRK:

  • Having joined Reeds Rains in May 2010, by December 2011 she was second in the firm for overall banking and first for life insurance sales, a 122% conversion of life cover.
  • Has a can-do attitude, regularly working on her days off to ensure clients get the best service, especially on deals requiring fast turnaround.
  • Usually works seven days a week.
  • Already helping train new advisers in her firm.

WHAT DOES BEING CROWNED TOP OF THE LEAGUE MEAN TO YOU?
I’m surprised but delighted – it’s an extra recognition that means so much to me and really makes all the hard work that I have put in over the last two years seem worthwhile.

JUDGES PRAISED YOUR STRONG WORK ETHIC, REGULARLY WORKING SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. IS THIS A SIGN OF HOW IMPORTANT YOUR JOB IS TO YOU?
Yes, it’s extremely important to me – it’s an enormous part of my life. Fortunately, my husband is a fantastic support to me as I basically go home in the evening and start work again. I love my job and I’m 100% committed to it.

YOU WERE ALSO ABLE TO ACHIEVE A 122% CONVERSION FOR LIFE COVER FOR 2011. WHAT IS YOUR SECRET?
It’s that I believe in the importance of having adequate protection myself – I’m very passionate about it and I make sure my clients understand why it’s important to have a plan B. That’s why my conversion rates are so high.

WHAT’S THE MARKET LIKE IN YOUR LOCAL AREA OF WEST YORKSHIRE AT THE MOMENT?
I look after three branches in West Yorkshire and most of the cases I see are for purchase business. These days, I find that people are also a lot more realistic about what they can get.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO FINANCIAL SERVICES?
I’ve been a broker since 2001 – originally I wanted to be a nurse, but then when I was 18 I saw an advertisement to train up as a mortgage adviser and that seemed a more attractive choice. I started my career working in Leeds & Holbeck, now Leeds Building Society, and I have never looked back.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF THE JOB?
I like helping the clients, getting them sorted and the excitement that comes from writing the business. I get so excited writing the mortgage, I can’t tell you.

FINALLY, IF YOU COULD BE ANY FOOTBALLER FOR A DAY, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
Well I wouldn’t really want to be any footballer for the day, but if I could pick a footballer to take out for a day it would probably be David Beckham.
