Valuation website for consumers

Hometrack is to launch the UK’s first online consumer property valuation service. It will give the public access to information previously only available to mortgage lenders, estate agents and surveyors.

From October 27 the website will be available for the public to obtain an independent, up-to-date valuation of a property. Previously the public could only obtain information on how much comparable properties had sold for.

Simon White, director of Ashdown Lyons, says although automated valuation websites will become widespread they are likely to generate more business for surveyors and estate agents.

He says: “Automated valuation will never take the place of someone physically inspecting a property because there are some things, like character, only a human being can take into account.”
