Next govt ‘must fix housing crisis’

Council of Mortgage Lenders chairman Moray McDonald has urged the next government to sort out the housing crisis “once and for all”.

Speaking last week at the trade body’s annual lunch in London, McDonald, head of personal and business banking products at Royal Bank of Scotland, called for the major parties to agree on a housing strategy. He said: “Dealing with the supply side, in my view, has to be our new ‘North Star’ that everyone aims for. To get there, we need a housing strategy that commands all-party support with a three-line whip from national government down to the parish council to ensure it’s implemented.

“That strategy should come from us, the industry, in partnership with government. Fix this and the market itself will address affordability.”

Dame Kate Barker, who has written two influential reports on housing supply and planning, was a guest at the lunch and called for public land to be brought forward to reach the target of 200,000 new homes a year by 2020.
