Taylor’s Tour…..

Henry Taylor’s day job is running a mortgage broking business in Eastbourne on the south coast of England, when not taking part in the Seat Cupra Championship

In the past couple of weeks I have written about the A1 Grand Prix series, which has given motor racing fans something to talk about during the winter months. Another series that has recently been launched is the Grand Prix Masters.

This is dedicated to over-45 year old former Grand Prix drivers. It’s an unusual concept but it’s great to see revered drivers such as Nigel Mansell, Emerson Fittipaldi, and Hans Stuck battling it out again.

The series kicked off at Kyalami in South Africa on November 13. Mansell, the 1992 Formula 1 world champion, was quickest in all of the qualifying sessions and claimed pole position for the first race.

These guys were the Grand Prix drivers that were racing when I used to watch racing on TV as a child. I remember Mansell doing battle with Ayrton Senna in Portugal, and that famous race in Australia when Mansell lost the world championship due to his rear tyre failing.

Ayrton Senna was my schoolboy hero and he brought a certain magic to Formula 1.

But Mansell certainly has not lost his magic touch and, from pole position, he led from the green light and held on to win the race by less than half a second from the 1972 and 1974 Formula 1 world champion, Emerson Fittipaldi.

I like the concept of this series, and perhaps if Michael Schumacher retires from Formula 1 soon he will join in the fun.
