PHIL WHITEHOUSE
HEAD
THE MORTGAGE ALLIANCE

HOW WAS 2010 FOR TMA?
At TMA we managed to hit the majority of our business objectives and made some positive changes to the business. It was a good year for our customer service strategy and we have worked hard to build some productive and long-lasting relationships.

DO YOU THINK MORE LENDERS WILL REDUCE THEIR PROC FEES NEXT YEAR?
I have mixed feelings on this one. In my experience once a few lenders start looking at proc fees, others tend to follow suit. Unfortunately in the current climate it’s difficult to see any move being an upward one. However, there are some new lenders entering the market that only distribute through intermediaries and if this trend continues, it could bring a more competitive edge and therefore have a positive bearing on proc fees. I
am clutching at straws a little.

IF YOU WERE HEAD OF THE FINANCIAL SERVICES AUTHORITY FOR A DAY WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
In any business, getting closer to and understanding customers is never a bad thing. On that basis I would make sure all the senior decision makers worked side by side with brokers for a short period and were paid only by the sales results over this time. This would help illustrate
just how hard and complex the current mortgage market can be.

IF YOU WEREN’T IN FINANCIAL SERVICES WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?
Apart from the obvious temptation to say a footballer or
some form of sportsman I hope I would be in a job where
I was helping people in some way and really making a
difference in their everyday lives.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SECRET TALENTS THE INDUSTRY DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT?
I wish I could say yes to this but unfortunately I can’t. But like many I will be making the usual new year’s resolutions to learn how to play a musical instrument and speak another language.

WHAT ARE YOU HOPING FOR FROM SANTA CLAUS THIS YEAR?
I would be happy to reverse the modern trend of purchased gifts and instead receive a nice home knit Val Doonican jumper or socks knitted by a close relative. Failing that a nice bottle of brandy to be consumed beside a roaring open fire would be rather nice.
