2.57 Million jobless figure is a 17-year record, says ONS

UK unemployment rose by 114,000 between June and August to reach a 17-year high, figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal.

Unemployment hit 2.57 million, with the level for 16 to 24 year olds reaching a high of 991,000 for the quarter. The ONS says the unemployment rate increased by 8.1%.

The number of people out of work and claiming benefits rose by 17,500 to 1.6 million in September.

There was also a 175,000 cut in the number of part-time workers and a 74,000 reduction in the number of over-65s in employment.
