Act before cover is required, not after

Last winter we saw the harshest weather in the UK for 30 years and a flurry of home improvement activity is expected before this winter.

The usual improvements are in store but individuals are expected to pay particular attention to insulation and energy efficiency in case of another severe winter. The National Home Improvement Council has dubbed this autumn home improvement season, with a focus on making homes resilient to extremes of weather.

It does not surprise me that home owners want to be prepared – what surprises me is the degree to which last year’s cold weather affected our lives.

Cars were stranded, emergency services were unable to reach people in need, the elderly were unable to leave their homes, schools were shut and people struggled to get to work. In extreme cases, people were unable to work owing to injuries resulting from the bad weather.

As a nation we tend to react to situations rather than prepare for them. We can never predict when something may happen that affects our ability to work and it’s worrying that individuals tend to consider protection needs only after a loved one is taken ill or dies.

We should focus on educating people to think about the future and the things that may interrupt their daily routines. We should also ensure everyone has the cover they may need in the event of a crisis, be it medical, weather-related or anything else that affects them.
