ASA tells Abbotts to withdraw ad’s misleading claims

The Advertising Standards Authority has upheld a complaint by Spicerhaart Group against Abbotts Estate Agents, part of Countrywide Group.

Spicerhaart said the claims ’The number one local agent’ and ’We sell a house every two minutes’ were misleading and challenged whether they could be substantiated. Abbotts said the latter claim was based on gross sales by Countrywide in 2009.

The ASA considered that readers of the ad would interpret the claim ’number one local agent’ to mean Abbotts had a greater local market share or sold more properties locally than other agents, when it was actually based on winning the best large chain award at the 2010 Estate Agent Of The Year awards.
