Skipton has appointed Peter Hales as a non-executive director.
Hales started his career in the insurance and financial services industry when he joined General Accident in 1968.
He spent his career building and growing distribution, rising to sales and marketing director of Norwich Union Life.
During the last 10 years, Hales played a leading role in the growth of the Aviva Group, through the mergers of General Accident, Commercial Union and Norwich Union and was deputy chairman of the joint venture with the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Within the wider financial services market, Hales was elected president of the Chartered Insurance Institute for 2005/6, was chairman of the Association of British Insurers’ distribution committee and a member of the ABI management committee.
After retiring from Norwich Union in 2006, he joined the board of Just Retirement and is also a member of the Accenture insurance advisory board.
He says: “I am delighted to be joining the board of such a successful and diverse organisation during a period of exciting change for the business
and the industry.
“I look forward to making a contribution to the continued success of Skipton.”
John Rawlings, chairman of Skipton, says: “Peter has an outstanding track record in growing and acquiring businesses within the highly competitive financial services sector – something which matches perfectly with Skipton’s own strategy.
“His authority on the life and pensions market will also be extremely valuable and further strengthen the knowledge of the board.”
