Santander picks Sard to head loan division

Santander has appointed Miguel Sard as the managing director of its newly created mortgage division.

From today, all mortgage products and marketing responsibilities across its retail and intermediary channels will be brought into the newly created mortgage division.

Previously, retail assets director Phil Cliff was responsible for Santander’s mortgage products, while Sard, who most recently held the position of head of intermediaries at Santander, was responsible for intermediary relationships.

However, as of last week Sard took responsible for Santander’s entire UK mortgage proposition and will report to head of banking Steve Pateman.

Santander for Intermediaries sales director Brad Fordham will become managing director of Santander for Intermediaries. Both appointments are subject to FCA approval.

Cliff will take on a new senior role in Santander UK’s retail division, leading the transformation of its retail network.

Sard says: “I am delighted to be heading up our new Santander mortgages division. It is an exciting time for Santander mortgages and we are focused on becoming the lender of choice for both customers and intermediaries.

“Key to this will be the development of products to support our customers as they buy their first home and later as they progress up the property ladder. I look forward to building upon the strong momentum of the past year as we continue to offer our customers great products suited to their changing needs.”

Sard joined Santander in 2007 as the chief executive of Santander Insurance Services before going onto become managing director of Santander for Intermediaries – then Abbey for Intermediaries – in 2011.

Fordham joined Santander from NatWest in 1995. He joined Santander for Intermediaries as sales director in 2010 after occupying various retail distribution roles.

Cliff joined Abbey National in 2000 from NatWest. In 2008, Cliff became Santander’s mortgage marketing director and then becoming responsible for all personal lending – mortgages and other types of loans – in 2010.

London & Country associate director of communications David Hollingworth says: “Brokers will welcome the fact Santander has chosen someone who knows the broker sector well to lead its new mortgage division.”
