The Mortgage Mole

Pushing the envelope At the 2012 Mortgage Strategy Awards last week the great and the good of the industry were out in their glad rags to celebrate the mortgage industry’s Oscars.

There were some interesting fashions on display, chief among them sported by Richard Sexton, business development director at e.surv, who dispensed with the usual black or white dinner jacket in favour of a blue floral shirt with tie – could this be the start of a new trend? Hopefully not.

There were plaudits for PMS chairman John Malone’s speech for Lifetime Achievement Award winner Vic Jannels, chairman of All Types of Mortgages. But mystery surrounded a black scar he was sporting on his cheek.

“I’ve gone from being the Godfather to Scarface,” Malone joked to Mole, referring to his well-known industry nickname.

He then explained that it was the result of a trip to the hospital for a minor operation. Mole hopes it heals soon.

Top flight Well done to Duncan Crocker, managing director of Legal & General Network, and his team, Duncan’s Dawdlers, for successfully racing up all 920 steps of Tower 42 in the City of London last Thursday. Crocker sped up the stairs in 11 minutes 46 seconds.

This was the fourth event to be held at Tower 42, with the over £250,000 raised going to charity Shelter.

The other members of Duncan’s Dawdlers from L&G were Heather Froment-Jones (12.43), Helena Wang (10.15) and Martyn Smith, who whipped up the tower in a super-speedy 8.38.

Mortgage Strategy editor Robert Thickett was also a member of Duncan’s Dawdlers and despite a few pre-race jitters successfully ran up it in 10.22.

Plenty still to be done despite B2L growth

The Council of Mortgage Lenders has announced the 2011 figures for buy-to-let and they are a pleasant surprise compared with what was being predicted.

Bob Young

At least the outlook for B2L is positive

While there’s been little to smile about since the credit crunch hit a few years back, the upward trajectory of the buy-to-let market has offered some comfort.
