Last week we interviewed LEA Financial Services founder Les Whitfield, and this week it is the turn of DNA Financial Solutions’ founders Drew Turner (pictured below, left, with co-director Adam Mcghee).
Tell me about your firm in three sentences.
DNA Financial Solutions is a fresh new mortgage and insurance firm that only hit the ‘go live’ button a couple of months ago.
We pride ourselves on offering a tailored, individual and unique service to all clients, no matter their financial history.
Our aim is to bring modern methods to a very traditional process.
What is your headcount?
Currently we’re sat at a whopping two – my business partner Adam and I. We do however have strong aspirations and plans in place to grow that number sooner rather than later!
Where are you based?
We’re based in Worsley, Salford. As it stands, however, we aim to move in to the flourishing MediaCityUK by the end of the year.
What led you to become mortgage brokers?
As individuals we both had very corporate backgrounds, spending a number of years with both Skipton and Yorkshire Building Society respectively.
As great as these companies are, you become a very small cog in a very large machine and it’s quite easy to stagnate.
Being ambitious we simply felt that the right step for progression was to move into the intermediary market.
What are the best parts of your job?
Simply put, we feel like we can make a difference.
From knowing that you’ve given the client the best advice possible to assisting them in reaching their property aspirations, we can genuinely help and that’s what we’re here for at the end of the day!
What are your plans for your firm’s future?
We are both very driven, we’d love to be a nationally recognised brand known for its quality and innovation. Not asking too much, are we!
To be as successful as we want to be we know reputation is key. We want to be identified not only for offering that exceptional service that every client craves but for also giving young, motivated individuals the perfect chance to develop with us.
What annoys you about the mortgage market?
We’re still very much in the hangover period after the credit crunch and it shows when it comes to the compliance side of things.
We get it, it’s there for a reason and rightly so but sometimes the lack of flexibility in the market or the inability for some lenders to look outside box is frustrating.
And what is the best thing about it?
It’s completely customer focussed, what you do can affect a client for a long, long time and whilst that might be a scary thought, it also shows how important we in this job really are.
What one thing would improve brokers’ working lives the most?
Data migration! Now we know this is something that is being worked on by a number of networks at the moment but it is yet to come to fruition.
A lot of time is spent collating information on the fact find etc. Imagine a world where we didn’t have to re-type that information in order to send it to a lender.
What is the best day you’ve ever had, and why?
For me, it has to be 13th September 2014. This is the day my uncle and I completed our mammoth challenge of walking from Land’s End to Halifax – 26 miles a day for 26 days, all in the name of charity.
We managed to raise a total of just over £26,000 for Cancer Research & Macmillan Cancer Support.
Which person, alive or dead, would you most like to have a drink with?
I’m going to break the mould and go for a two-parter on this one. First up, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The man is the living embodiment of ‘if you want something, go for it’ an unorthodox but truly inspirational character. Alternatively Jimmy Carr, purely on the basis that the worst that could happen is you have a few laughs and get a little tax advice!
Which teams do you support, and why?
Adam is a BIG football fan, a lifelong Burnley FC supporter and bleeds claret and blue! I’m more rugby league boy, Halifax RLFC through and through thanks to my grandad. At least one of us backs a proper sport, you can decide which!
Finally, what do you most like to read in Mortgage Strategy?
I actually really enjoy the Broker Focus section – I like to see who we’re competing against.
