Day in the life of… Piero Bassu, head of financial services and capital markets, Hometrack

My alarm goes off…

At a reasonable 7am. I have chosen to invest into quality of life and I live an easy 14 minutes walk from work. I like taking my time in the morning and getting myself organised for the day ahead, so it means I can do all that and still be in the office by 8.30am at the latest.

I can’t leave the house without…

…having drunk copious amount of coffee. I am Italian and must adhere to the cafettiere ritual every morning.

I get to work by…

…foot, through villagey Bermondsey Street and the vibrant Tower Bridge area.

As soon as I get to work I get myself geared up for key meetings and outcomes of the day, and catch-up with team members about ongoing clients’ deliverables.

The main purpose of my job is…

To support UK mortgage lenders and other financial institutions in providing better and faster mortgage application experiences to their customers, as well as enhancing internal risk management and governance.

I do this by providing the market with tools like automated valuation models and desktop valuations solutions, as well as forming strategic partnerships with my clients.

I’ve been in this role for…

…just over a year. Previously I worked in the banking sector in the UK and Asia Pacific for 17 years.

I joined from…

Australian investment bank called Macquarie Bank

My typical day…

involves liaising with clients about supporting delivering their valuation and collateral risk management strategy as well as working with my team and colleagues within the wider Zoopla Property Group on initiatives to deliver better propositions to the UK property and mortgage market. I often travel around the country for face-to-face meetings with my clients.

People may not know that I’m responsible for…

ensuring I give enough time and attention to my family and relatives in England, Italy and Australia. Distances, timezones and ticket prices make it a very challenging exercise!

A common misconception about my job is…

it is only UK focused. Hometrack are a funding member of the European AVM alliance – a consortium of leading AVM providers promoting AVM standards and best practice – meaning I meet my peers from other jurisdictions and learn a lot about different property markets across Europe.

My favourite work memory is…

my first Hometrack mortgage symposium in London, bringing together chief risk officers and head of products from our client base to discuss existing and emerging trends and opportunities in the property market. It was inspiring to hear and participate in debates on the evolution of mortgages are designed and delivered to the market, in turn supporting build the UK economy.

A perk of the job is…

working in a vibrant propTech environment full of talent and diversity. The free beer at close of play on Friday helps too!

To unwind after work I like to…

cook for my husband and friends, and catch up on my favourite TV shows over a nice glass of Italian wine.

My role in five words is…

busy, technical, sociable, eclectic and varied.
