Surveyor convicted in £10m mortgage fraud

A Hertfordshire surveyor who accepted gifts worth £1m in a £10m mortgage fraud has been convicted at the Old Bailey.

According to the BBC, Mary-Jane Rathie, a senior surveyor, was convicted of five counts of fraud between May 2007 and June 2009 and of concealing criminal property.

The court heard that Rathie provided dishonestly-inflated property valuations for a woman known as Joanne Pier, who used them to secure mortgages from the Bank of Scotland, in exchange for money and expensive cars.

Rathie’s husband, Met Police officer David Rathie, was cleared of a charge of concealing criminal property.

The jury heard that two luxury cars were said to be registered in his name.

Rathie, who denied the charges, was told by the judge that she faces imprisonment of some length when sentenced on July 27.
