Surveyor ‘accepted gifts worth £1m’ in mortgage scam

A Hertfordshire surveyor accepted ‘gifts’ worth £1m as part of a £10m mortgage fraud, the Old Bailey has heard.
According to reports, Mary-Jane Rathie, a senior surveyor, is alleged to have overvalued London properties in exchange for money and expensive cars.
Rathie, 43, received £900,000 in cheques and money transfers as well as a Bentley Continental and a Range Rover Sport, jurors were told.
David Durose, prosecuting, said the gifts were payment for dishonest valuations and the money was used to pay off a mortgage and buy a new property.
Rathie denies five allegations of fraud between May 2007 and June 2009, and she and her husband, David, each deny a charge of concealing criminal property.
She is accused of dishonestly inflating valuations for a woman known as Joanne Pier, who used the valuations to obtain mortgages from the Bank of Scotland worth millions of pounds.
The trial continues.
