FSA appoints consumer senior advisor

The Financial Services Authority has announced the appointment of Julian Edwards to the role of consumer senior advisor.

Edwards has spent more than 30 years working in roles championing consumer rights for organisations such as Which? and Consumer International, the global federation of consumer organisations, where he was director-general between 1996 and 2005.

The FSA has created the new role of consumer senior advisor as it pushes consumer protection through intensive supervision and risk assessment.

The regulator has also pledged to strengthen its understanding of consumer issues.

Hector Sants, chief executive at the FSA, says: “I am delighted to announce Julian Edward’s appointment today as a senior advisor to the FSA.

“He has considerable experience to bring to bear on the key issues that we face in protecting consumers.

“Through intensive and intrusive regulation we are focusing our skills and insight into not just taking action when we find failures – but pro-actively identifying and addressing issues that have the potential to harm consumers.

“This is a step change in approach and Edwards will have an invaluable role in ensuring that we have the ability to achieve this.”

Senior advisors are a core part of the FSA’s delivery of intensive supervision.  The team provides experience on regulatory, market and now consumer matters.

  • Glad to see that the FSA have made another senior appointment of a person experienced in Financial Services. He will obviously be able to champion consumer rights from a very balanced perspective!!

At least they didn't appoint a youngster just out of Uni as they have done with some of their lending co-ordinators.

I wonder if they will ever grasp the concept that you can only Regulate something you understand
