Mortgage complaints fall in first-half of 2009

The regulator has for the second time published complaint figures for the financial services industry, with mortgage firms revealed to have received 11,755 complaints in H1 2009, down from 12,716 in H2 2008.

The figures show 34% of all mortgage complaints were upheld, slightly down from the 35% in H2 2008, with 8% of all complaints closed after eight weeks.

There was also a drop in the number of complaints relating to flexible mortgages, falling from 8,685 in H2 2008 to 5,894 in H1 2009.

Complaints relating to impaired credit mortgages rose from 1,266 in H2 2008 to 1,808 in H1 2009.

Complaints about self-cert mortgages also fell to 2,240 in H1 2009, down from 2,365 in H2 2008.

Overall between January and the end of June 2009 complaints to the FSA increased by 2% to 1.51m. The proportion of complaints dealt with in over eight weeks increased from 10% to 11%; and the proportion of complaints upheld by firms fell from 40 % to 38%.
