Player of the month - August

John Bartley, Oval Financial Services, Mortgage Adviser
Top Of The League is a new industry recognition scheme in association with Woolwich mortgages from Barclays. The aim is to recognise two outstanding individuals each month who will be named Player of the Month or Manager of the Month. Top of the League nominees have all delivered excellent service in their company or community, for colleagues or clients. Each month during the football season Woolwich talent scouts will be hunting out star players and managers in all major networks, clubs and brokerages. They will then be whittled down to a short list of five names, before the winners are chosen by our panel of Manager of the month

NAME: John Bartley
COMPANY: Oval Financial Services
JOB TITLE: Mortgage Adviser
What does being awarded Player Of The Month mean to you?
I’ve worked hard in the industry and with charity work so it’s nice to be recognised. I didn’t realise that people noticed what we did so obviously its good to find that it has been.
The Top Of The League judges were impressed by how much of your time you commit to charity - what inspires you?
You can’t help everyone but you’ve got to give something back plus it’s a good laugh for a worthy cause.
How has your firm, Oval Financial Services, adapted to the market downturn over the last three years?
I class myself as an adviser rather than a broker because there are many people who try to seek free advice and then go to a comparison website. A broker will only try to get people moving whereas if I advise people to stay put I expect to be paid for that advice.
How is the market in your local area?
We’ve definitely turned the corner in Nottingham. I’ve got leads now from people I had advised to stay put, but who now want to move. Everyone needs to adapt to changing circumstances.
What’s the best part about being a mortgage broker?
No client is the same. You can have two customers who appear the same but their mortgage aspirations, life ambitions and credit history could be totally different. I also like new purchases - I always deliver a bottle of champagne when someone moves home.
If you could be the head of the Financial Services Authority for a day, how would you improve the market?
I would update the qualifications for brokers.
If you could relegate a part of the mortgage market to the Conference division, what would you choose and why?
If you need to self-cert your income you’re either lying or defrauding the taxman. I’d relegate that and dual pricing.
Finally, if you could be any footballer for a day, who would you choose and why?
Frank Lampard. He earns lots of money, is a good player and has a lovely girlfriend.
