Mysterious faith in state benefits
As many as 16.5 million Brits believe the state welfare system provides an adequate safety net to maintain an acceptable standard of living.
Even harder to explain is the huge increase in the number of us willing to believe this proposition since 2003 when similar research on the subject by Ipsos MORI was commissioned by Scottish Provident.
Back then just one in five of those questioned said they believed that the state would see them right in times of difficulty.
But not everybody is being fooled. It seems that individuals aged between 45 and 54 are among the leading sceptics, followed by 35 to 44 year olds.
It’s only the old and the young who are naive.
