Can franchising offer a lifeline for small packagers? Figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders show that September’s mortgage lending total of £17.7bn was 42% down on 2007’s total. This simply puts into figures what firms in the mortgage broking and packaging sector already know: business levels have fallen sharply, many of the packager-based lenders are now out of the market, and the lenders that remain seem to be doing all they can to win new borrowers direct and cut out the broker.
