Northern Rock signs £10m Newcastle United sponsorship deal
Northern Rock plc, the new bank formed following the restructure of the Northern Rock business on 1 January 2010, has become the main sponsor of Newcastle United Football Club, in a £10m deal.
The new four-year contract will commence from the start of the 2010/11 football season.
The total sponsorship value may vary, from £1.5m to a maximum potential of £10m, with payments phased over four years.
The maximum potential will only be realised if Newcastle United is playing in the Premier League for the full contract period. The contract is subject to an agreed review point after two years and will expire at the end of the 2013/14 season.
Gary Hoffman, chief executive of Northern Rock, says: “I am pleased to confirm that the new bank has become the main sponsor of Newcastle United. There has been a long-standing relationship between Northern Rock and the club, which dates back to 2004, and it represents an important community link.
“Brand awareness and promotion are important elements in the continuing development of the company. However, we remain mindful of our responsibilities under government ownership and only consider those advertising and promotion channels that deliver a high return on investment and good strategic fit. We believe that the sponsorship deal with Newcastle United provides both of these.
“The new contract will help keep the Northern Rock brand in the public eye and reinforce our strong roots in the North East region, a community we are immensely proud to support.”

Am I the only person who is incredulous and incensed that my income tax is being spent on superfluous advertising deals with a lower-leage football club whose management have done a shockingly bad job in recent seasons? Or is everyone else too weary to register disapproval any more?

As a Manchester United supporter, why as a taxpayer would I want to sponser Newcastle United!
Shows that the idiot running the country has no control of how taxpayers money is been used by these banks.

As Gary Hoffman is vice chairman of Coventry City FC, I just hope he negotiated 3 points on Feb 17th as part of the deal.

I agree with most of what has been said but you also need to recognise that Northern Rock is an important institution in newcastle and how loyal the Newcastle fans are - by doing this many of them will now move their savings back to the society.

Why do they not go the whole way and re-name the stadium "Northern Rock ex Shareholder Stadium"
