Nationwide could close up to four service centres

Nationwide has placed 145 staff in consultation as it considers closing four of its six mortgage service centres.

The lender says it is considering closing its centres in Birmingham, Chester, Doncaster and Newcastle and transferring these services to its two other centres in Glasgow and Northampton.

The proposals have resulted in all 145 staff from the centres being placed in consultation until the end of May.

A spokeswoman for Nationwide says: “It is too early to talk about redundancies. We are looking at proposals to close four of our centres. We believe that operating a smaller number of larger contact centres will allow us to become efficient.”

  • I am not surprised at this, as I have not used them for some time now. Do feel for staff loosing their jobs tho !!

  • What a pity, I've always had really fast and efficient service from their Birmingham Centre - just the complete opposite of the likes of Abbey.

  • It is sad to hear this news but if the producers stop producing then administrators will be hit. I hope the FSA are reading this article with their large expenses, your day is coming.

  • Gutted! My favourite lender getting rid of a superb service centre in Newcastle! The staff are professional, knowledgeable and efficient- everything the other lenders don't have to offer!!! REALLY disappointed with this news.

  • The service from Chester has been excellent, with one telephone call which is directed to the appropriate person sorting everything out. In comparison, it can take an hour to speak to the wrong person at the Woolwich

  • the loss of the Newcastle service centre would be a big loss - the staff are very knowledgable and efficient and they are actually very enthusiastic - i have had experience of Northhampton and it was a complete nightmare -this would do a lot of damage to the Nationwide's reputation
