Regulation U-turn may harm rental sector, says ARLA

The Association of Residential Letting Agents says it is disappointed the government has abandoned Labour plans to regulate the private rented sector.

The announcement was made in the House of Commons last week by housing minister Grant Shapps.

Ian Potter, operations manager at ARLA, says: “We are extremely dis-appointed with the minister’s decision to scrap the previous government’s plans for the regulation of letting agents.

“This risks seriously hampering the improvement of standards in the private rented sector, its repu-tation and the important role it plays in the housing market. It also fails to protect consumers who have nowhere to go when there is a failure of service or fraud.”
