The industry has been left stunned by Assurant Solutions’ decision to make Nigel Payne, head of its intermediary business, redundant.

His role as managing director of Assurant Intermediary has been made redundant following a strategic review by its parent, Assurant Solutions.

Kevin Paterson, who has been the sales and marketing director at Assurant Intermediary since 2008, will take on some of Payne’s responsibilities, while operational activity will continue through the existing management structure led by operations director Vicky Hodgson.

Jason Berry, sales and marketing director at Safe & Secure, says: “Nigel’s departure is surprising. He knows the intermediary market better than anyone and has been supportive of our firm over the past couple of years.

“We would work with him again in the future and wish him luck in whatever he does next.”

Dev Malle, sales and marketing director at Personal Touch Financial Services, says: “It’s a shock to see Nigel go as he has made great strides with Assurant’s intermediary business and spearheaded its proposition.”

And David Copland, chief executive of Pink Home Loans, says: “It is a big loss to Assurant and its business in the intermediary field.

“It’s because of Nigel that it has made such an impact in this space.”

Mike Balsley, president and chief executive officer of Assurant Solutions Europe, says the decision to include Assurant Intermediary in the restructure was necessary to provide a broader pan-European support structure for the business.

He adds that he would like to thank Payne for the important contribution that he has made to Assurant Intermediary during his tenure, and wishes him every success in the future.
