CML manifesto targets politicians

The Council of Mortgage Lenders has compiled a post-credit crunch mortgage manifesto for the next parliament advising politicians to avoid knee-jerk reactions when it comes to regulation.

The CML released its last manifesto on the subject prior to the 2005 general election.

The new manifesto calls for enhanced support for borrowers in financial difficulty and an expansion of the government’s HomeBuy Direct scheme.

The trade body wants the govern-ment to cut the number of low-cost home ownership schemes and simplify them to encourage more lenders to participate.

In its manifesto the CML says: “We call on the government to keep the reform of mortgage regulation as simple as possible and not try to fix what is not broken.”
