Player of the Month - May

Mark McLeod, London & Country, Mortgage adviser

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THIS SEASON’S PLAYERS AND MANAGERS OF THE MONTH

The Barclays Premier League has drawn to a close, which means May is the final month of the season for Top of the League. It’s been a great season and the quality of entrants for Player and Manager of the Month has been outstanding. We have unearthed some truly amazing talent, including our May winners profiled below, in the intermediary market and look forward to discovering more next season. Thank you to all of the judges and everyone who took the time to nominate colleagues.

Name: Mark McLeod
Company: London & Country
Job Title: Mortgage adviser

WHAT DOES BEING TOP OF THE LEAGUE MEAN TO YOU?
It is recognition for everything that I have achieved, which is particularly good to receive when the market is going through a difficult period.

IN YOUR NOMINATION THE JUDGES PRAISED YOU FOR JUGGLING A LARGE CASE VOLUME WITHOUT COMPROMISING ON CUSTOMER SERVICE. WHAT DO YOU PUT YOUR SUCCESS DOWN TO?
Hard work - I often have to speak to clients in the evenings and at weekends.

THE JUDGES ALSO PRAISED YOU FOR SUPPORTING YOUR FIRM’S GRADUATES. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR YOUNG ADVISERS TO HAVE A ROLE MODEL?
I think it is important for them to work alongside experienced advisers so they can learn how to deal with clients and how to conduct themselves in a working environment.

HOW HAS 2011 BEEN COMPARED WITH 2010?
The market is improving. There are more lenders offering 90% LTV products, we are getting more remortgage business because of expectations of a base rate rise and our completion rate has picked up.

YOU’RE BASED IN BATH. HOW IS THE MARKET IN YOUR LOCAL AREA?
It has not suffered as much as other areas because it is one of those regions, like London, where property prices remain fairly high regardless of market conditions.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A MORTGAGE BROKER?
I liked the idea of getting paid based on the work you have done and the sales aspect of the job.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF THE JOB?
Helping people buy houses. It is great to be able to help individuals achieve something that means a lot to them.

FINALLY, IF YOU COULD BE ANY FOOTBALLER FOR A DAY WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
Jimmy Glass, the former Carlisle United goalkeeper, because he scored a last-minute goal that kept Carlisle in the Football League in 1999. I supported Carlisle when I was younger so he is a particular hero of mine.

Why judges picked…
