Player of the month - March
Sharon Varley, Market Street Mortgages, Director

Top of the League is always on the lookout for the best talent in the intermediary market. If you work with outstanding individuals who have the potential to be crowned Player or Manager of the Month for April, email the head of the judging panel, Jonathan Cornell, at totl@jonathancornell.co.uk providing your company details, including telephone number and a paragraph on who you would like to nominate and why. What are we looking for? Top of the League nominees have all delivered excellence for either their company, community, colleagues or clients. You need to describe what the nominee has recently done in one or more of these categories, explaining why they should win this prestigious award.
Name: Sharon Varley
Company: Market Street Mortgages
Job Title: Director
WHAT DOES BEING TOP OF THE LEAGUE MEAN TO YOU?
I’m flattered to be nominated and it is a great honour to win.
IN YOUR NOMINATION THE JUDGES PRAISED THE FACT THAT AS WELL AS RUNNING A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS, YOU CONTINUE TO WORK IN THE COMMUNITY - HOW DO YOU FIND THE TIME?
It can be difficult but I have a supportive husband, without whom I would not be able to do so much in my spare time.
HOW DO YOU FIND WORKING WITH YOUR HUSBAND?
I enjoy it. We have always worked together, as that is how we met, so it would feel strange not to work with him.
HOW HAS 2011 BEEN COMPARED TO 2010?
We have had a good start compared with 2010 and February was one of our best months since the downturn.
HOW IS THE MARKET IN YOUR LOCAL AREA?
The market didn’t pick up as quickly in the Midlands as elsewhere, but it is starting to progress now. More people are moving house and a number of developments are restarting after being put on hold during the recession.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A MORTGAGE BROKER?
I fell into it but now I love being a broker. I was my husband’s assistant at Bradford & Bingley and when he took redundancy, I left with him and we set up our own business.
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF THE JOB?
Working with clients who become friends. We look after our customers so almost all our new business comes from client referrals.
ASIDE FROM GETTING LENDERS TO PROVIDE HIGHER LTV MORTGAGES, WHAT COULD THE GOVERNMENT DO TO KICK-START THE HOUSING MARKET?
It needs to encourage lenders to look at first-time buyers and promote innovation. That will get the rest of the market moving.
FINALLY, IF YOU COULD BE ANY FOOTBALLER FOR A DAY, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
Wayne Rooney, because it would allow me to fulfil my ambition of getting in the shower with Ryan Giggs after a match.
Why judges picked…
- Did two charity bike rides last year for Help the Heroes and the National Trust and is training for the same rides this year.
- Is a member of a Parent-Teacher Association and runs the under-11s football team.
- Maintained staff levels in the downturn by restructuring finances.
- Engineered a successful recovery plan in 2010 through marketing campaigns to drive cross sales from protection.
