Name: Keith Barton
Company: Meadow Finance
Job Title: Mortgage adviser
WHAT DOES BEING TOP OF THE LEAGUE MEAN TO YOU?
It is an acknowledgement of my achievements and an indication that the decisions I have made to diversify the business were right.
IN YOUR NOMINATION THE JUDGES PRAISED YOU FOR DIVERSIFYING YOUR BUSINESS BEYOND MORTGAGES. WHAT DO YOU PUT YOUR SUCCESS DOWN TO?
People trusting my ability to arrange mortgages, so that when I went to them with other ideas they listened and had faith in me.
THE JUDGES ALSO PRAISED YOU FOR SUPPORTING A NEW ADVISER. IS A HANDS-ON APPROACH IMPORTANT IN BUSINESS?
Definitely. We offer a personal service to clients by meeting them face-to-face and always being available on the phone.
HOW HAS 2011 BEEN COMPARED WITH 2010?
The market has definitely picked up. There is greater availability of funding and while I would not say criteria has eased, lenders are looking to do more business this year.
YOU’RE BASED IN EDINBURGH HOW IS THE MARKET IN YOUR LOCAL AREA?
With the exception of the new-build sector, the market remains buoyant and demand is high.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A MORTGAGE BROKER?
It was primarily to spend more time with my two children because I was working long hours in investment banking when I had them. I was drawn to a career in the mortgage market because I thought it would allow me to use my banking skills and work flexible hours.
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF THE JOB?
Helping customers who do not think they will ever be able to get a mortgage to own a home.
FINALLY, IF YOU COULD BE ANY FOOTBALLER FOR A DAY, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
Arsenal player Jack Wilshere. He was recently voted Young Player Of The Year by the Professional Footballers’ Association and is also an England international so basically an all-round footballing prodigy. He is just 19, talented and has the world at his feet.

Why judges picked…
