Santander to recruit 600 staff

Santander is recruiting 600 new staff to cope with its acquisition of Royal Bank of Scotland branches.

The Spanish bank acquired 318 branches and 1.8m customers from RBS last month.

Reports in the FT suggested the planned recruitment could be up to 6,000 but Santander slammed the reports as “inaccurate”.

A spokeswoman says: “Santander is currently recruiting up to 600 staff to new roles to meet business growth and to continue improving its service. These roles are in addition to its normal recruitment plans.

“Recent press reports suggesting we are recruiting people above this number is inaccurate. Like any other company, the bank recruits many people each year as normal course of business to meet the requirements of staff turnover.”

RBS last week confirmed it is cutting 3,500 jobs as part of the sale of its branches.

  • Why not take on 600 of the RBS staff being made redundant????

  • Wouldnt that just be too sensible an answer - think of the savings on recruitment costs.....

  • They will recruit the 600 staff from RBS. Had Santander taken them as part of the RBS purchase, the staff may be entitled to existing benefits & employment history.
By making them redundant that's RBS's cost & problem. Now Santander can recruit them on a lower salary ( as they will be happy with just a job), with worse benefits & no issues with future redundancy for long term staff.
    Very clever Santander.

  • Lets hope the additional staff improves the appalling customer service they are currently providing.
