Gordon Brown to step down as Labour leader

Gordon Brown has announced today that he is stepping down as the Labour Party leader.
Brown says he wants a successor to be in place by the time of the party’s conference in September.
The announcement comes as the party starts formal talks with the Liberal Democrats
Brown says he has “no desire to stay in his position longer than was needed to form a stable government” he will ask the Labour Party to set in form the process of a leadership contest.
