Brown confirms election will be held on May 6

Brown has promised that from now until polling day he will travel the length and breadth of Britain with the message that “Britain is now on the way to economic recovery. And now is not the time to put it at risk.”

While David Cameron, leader of the Conservatives says his party is “fighting this election for the great ignored”.

He says: “Young, old, rich, poor, black, white, gay, straight. They start our businesses, operate our factories, teach our children, clean our streets, grow our food, keep us safe. They work hard, pay their taxes, obey the law.”

He says the election is about giving them hope.

And Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats, says his party represent “real change” and “fairness”.

The economy, taxation and public services will be the key areas of debate as the election draw near.

The campaign will also feature live television debates between the three main party leaders, similar to those held between the chancellors last week.
