Backlash over Allsopp’s Twitter slur on Melanie Bien

Television presenter Kirstie Allsopp has sparked a war of words on Twitter after making offensive comments about Melanie Bien, director of communications at Private Finance this morning.

The comments were made while Bien appeared on BBC Breakfast.

While watching the show the Location, Location, Location, presenter tweeted: “Finance woman on BBC breakfast clearly came directly from a night out and it’s debatable whether that’s a skirt of not  -hardtotakeserioulsy.”

Bien later tweeted: “No, as a mother of 18-moth old, no nights out and I was wearing a dress, not a skirt.”

To which Allsop replied: “It’s only fair to give right of reply!”

Allsopp later added: “For the record, I’m no saint, I do think, says and tweet mean things and I am as capable as anyone of hypocrisy, and my spelling is dodgy.”

One Bien supporter tweeted: “I find it really sad that women are so critical of each other re: appearance. It just wouldn’t happen with men.”

Rob Jupp, managing director of Brightstar Financial also weighed into the debate, he tweeted: “Just caught the end of this and I think this is scandalous that such a comment has been made. You are a wonderful ambassador for us all and I saw you this morning and thought you looked great!.”

Drew Wotherspoon, director of marketing at John Charcol also tweeted: “I’ll send Ray in a dress next time so she can really have something to talk about…ridiculous.”

  • Oh Dear Kirsty, what a ridiculous comment.

Have last week's events on Sky Sports not taught you anything?

What on earth Melanie's attire to do with anything I don't know!!!

For what it's worth, I thought she looked very smart, presentable and professional anyway.

  • Can I ask Drew if she does send Ray in to the show, will he be telling clients to fix or track at the moment? JC/Ray's recommendations seem to change so frequently!

  • Sorry Kirsty, but that was innappropriate. A bit like the craze for getting rich quick via property that you happily espouse

  • ..I think Bien can get away with a short skirt, not sure if Allsop can do the same...and I think Allsop seems to be making a few offensive remarks of late...

  • I'll tell you something else interesting, as a passionate Gooner Mel Bien does know the offside rule! Ms Allsopp however may not.

  • I saw the finance woman on the news and thought the same as Kirstie. The sight of that much leg in the morning put me off my cornflakes!

  • I think we all know which one of the two has the most experience and genuine knowledge of the property and mortgage markets!? How shallow can someone be to actually post such an offensive comment in the public domain? Well done to Mel for sticking up for herself...
