MPC meeting
The Monetary Policy Committee votes on the base rate and the size of the quantitative easing programme for the first time this year.

ECB meeting
The European Central Bank also decides today on interest rates. The bank is widely expected to cut rates from their current level of 1%, which would be the third consecutive month to see a rate cut.

Inflation figures for December published
The Office for National Statistics reveals the consumer prices index and retail prices index measures of inflation for December. It will be interesting to see whether inflation continues to fall.
January 23
CML lending data for December released
The Council of Mortgage Lenders publishes its gross mortgage lending data for December. Hopefully the figures will mark a positive end to 2011.
January 25
MPC minutes published
The Bank of England reveals the reasons behind the MPC’s January meeting decisions, as well as its latest concerns for the economy. Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor celebrates as Virgin Money signs a two-year deal to sponsor the football club.
