Housing remains our biggest asset
With state borrowing going through the roof chancellor Alistair Darling must have breathed a sigh of relief when he saw the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics which show that at the end of 2008 the total value of this country was £6.95trillion.
That's down £177bn on the previous year but it's still not bad should he have to mortgage us all before the next general election. And despite what house price gloom mongers may say the UK's most valuable asset continues to be housing, at 56% of total net worth.
