Going, going gone - but not to MPs
With Westminster still reeling from the expenses scandal fixtures and fittings from the House of Lords are to be auctioned off, which should give us commoners an insight into how members of the upper House squander our money.
Among the lots is a roll of hand-printed wallpaper similar in design to that ordered by lord chancellor Derry Irvine in 1998. At the time, Irvine justified the expense of redecorating his office as a "noble cause".
Auctioneer Bonhams expects the sale to benefit from the publicity surrounding expenses scandal but the downside for our discredited MPs is that they won't be able to bid for items and then claim them back on expenses.
