It’s not often that an Oscar Wilde play features in an article about technology in the mortgage industry, even less so when the writer shares a name with one of the characters in the play.

But the importance of being earnest should be borne in mind when mortgage professionals are selecting software.

With many types of client management systems on the market it’s important not to be deceived by glossy brochures and promises of functionality that do not live up to the hype.

When thinking of buying such a system you should first be clear about what you want from it.

Only then should you start looking at the options available, at which point a beauty parade of providers should be undertaken. Seeing demonstrations is paramount and be sure to ask representatives to show you the functionality you specifically need.

For example, you may need to know if a system offers true integration with product providers.

The ability to get quick and accurate quotes along with the capacity to apply for products online should be standard functionality these days.

Also, check that your provider has a strong financial pedigree. This will give an indication of whether funds are available to be reinvested in the system.

Honesty and sincerity from your provider should be high on your list of expectations, highlighting the importance of being earnest.
